Sandra Eula Lee, Exhibition view at The Gund Gallery
THE BEND, The Gund Gallery, April 23-May 27, 2018

THE BEND is inspired by the temporary structures built by residents in Beijing where I lived for some years. Neighborhoods underwent constant demolition and relocation of communities. These structures included make-shift stands, impromptu gardens, and improvised spaces, a continual creation of a poetics of space through inventive use of materials.

I drew upon centuries-old Asian garden design for my sculptures and installation. However, in my garden hacks, rock and bamboo coexist with chunks of asphalt, concrete, and other industrial materials of construction. Sealed containers of red chili peppers and fermented vegetables connect with transformative potential.

On the wall is a short video Jimenqiao Village featuring a pass-through space with residents and children that itself has been demolished.
